Though you of course hope to never have to encounter hackers, you have to be prepared or at least cognizant of the possibility. When deciding how prepared you should be, you should weight your costs vs. your level of paranoia. So how do you achieve a balance of good protection with a reasonable cost?
First, the most important thing is to be aware of your weakest access points. To beat a hacker, you have to think like a hacker. If you can find and strengthen your weakest areas, you will become more resilient against hackers.
Second, you need to have a backup plan in case hackers do infiltrate your systems. How will you access your customer contact information, active inventory, sales orders or A/R or A/P? If your computers are down, how else will you access information? You will need to have a way to access this information, so backups are always necessary!
Third, have a contingency plan! You need to be able to have a contingency plan that outlines how you will maintain your ERP system, who your telecom, IT and hardware employees are and what they are responsible for doing, any firewalls for yourself and your clients, specific syntax, and user IDs and tokens.
When you have these three steps done, you will be closer to protecting your organization against data breaches and infiltration. With that said, don’t forget that the probability of someone hacking your system through the Internet is a lot lower than issues caused by internal employees. Don’t forget to set up Do’s and Don’t’s for employees who have access to your system and use SouthWare’s roles templates to restrict access if necessary.
